Jacques Derenne advises multinational companies, public authorities, and industry associations on EU competition and regulatory law, with particular strength in State aid. He is leader of Sheppard’s EU Competition & Regulatory practice as well as professor at the Liège University.

His practice also includes advising on EU regulatory matters more broadly (advising on EU legislation and related national implementing legislation) and EU trade defense (anti-subsidy and anti-dumping proceedings). Jacques has been involved in the liberalisation process of nearly all regulated sectors since the early 1990s, and he has deep experience in the energy, aviation, rail, postal, telecom, satellite, audiovisual media, and tobacco industries. Clients turn to him for strategic advocacy in high-stakes investigations and disputes, where his combination of technical knowledge and practical insight delivers effective results.
He regularly pleads cases before the General Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union, national competition authorities, the Belgian and French courts and various regulatory bodies. Before the EU and national courts, Jacques Derenne represented in complex EU litigation clients such as Air France-KLM and Air France, Alstom, BT Pension Schemes Trustees Ltd, Brussels Airlines, EDF, European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), FagorBrandt, the EU agency Fusion for Energy, International Express Carrier Conference (IECC), V. Micula, Philip Morris International, SFEI/UFEX (DHL-FedEx), Tempus Energy, Ullens de Schooten or the European Commission.
Jacques's State aid experience spans three decades, during which time he has acted for beneficiaries, competitors, Member States as well as advised investors. In addition to his client work, Jacques has played a significant role in shaping EU State aid policy. He co-authored European Commission studies on State aid enforcement that informed the first Commission’s Recovery and Enforcement Notices, and he contributes quarterly State aid EU case law commentary to Concurrences since 2004. He co-edited, amongst others, the Enforcement of EU State aid law at national level - 2010 - Reports from the 27 Member States (Lexxion). He is also widely published and speaks frequently on competition law issues.
Jacques teaches State aid law at the University of Liège and the Brussels Study Center (formerly Brussels School of Competition), as well as, in 2026, at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is a founding member of the Global Competition Law Centre at the College of Europe.
