Derek Ridyard is an economist specialising in competition law and regulation. Since 2018 he has been a Member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London, where he has sat on a variety of cases including private damages actions (Royal Mail v DAF Trucks), appeals against CMA decisions (Lexon, Cérélia) and collective actions (Gutmann v Apple, Gormsen v Meta, le Patourel v BT). Prior to his appointment to the CAT, he spent some 30 years working in private practice as an expert on the economics of competition law, initially at NERA and then as one of the founders of RBB Economics.
Derek has published numerous articles on subjects including the economics of merger control, vertical restraints, exclusive dealing, dominant firm pricing and intellectual property. He is a member of the editorial board of the European Competition Law Review, and until recently held an appointment as a member of the UK government’s Regulatory Policy Committee.
